Remote Consultations

The ability to obtain a rapid consultation on challenging cases is a distinct benefit of digital pathology. In a standard consult, the pathologist has to ship the slides out through a courier and wait till the colleague receives the case. With digital pathology and associated software, pathologists can review a case together while sitting in different sites. Pathologists can send links to the virtual slides. Within minutes they can collaborate on a case, get opinions and get a report. Digital pathology improves turnaround time on cases by eliminating the inefficiencies of glass slide logistics such as time spent on packing slides, shipping them and waiting for the other site to receive, read and report on them. The quality of diagnosis is improved by obtaining a colleague’s expert opinion digitally.

Remote consultations can also help pathology practices overcome the geographical challenge of covering underserviced and rural areas where adequate availability of pathologists can be a challenge.
