THE INSTITUTE OF CANCER BIOLOGY
(THE DANISH CANCER SOCIETY) AND DANISH
CENTRE FOR TRANSLATIONAL BREAST CANCER
RESEARCH SELECTS SCIMAGIX'S IMAGE
INFORMATICS SOFTWARE SOLUTION TO
ACCELERATE BREAST CANCER RESEARCH
SAN MATEO, Calif. – November
4, 2003 - Scimagix™ Inc.,
a pioneer of enterprise image informatics
solutions for pharmaceutical and biotechnology
research and development), today announced
that the Institute of Cancer Biology
(part of the Danish Cancer Society)
and Danish Centre for Translational
Breast Cancer Research (DCTB), has
selected Scimagix's Image Informatics
software, to assist in its breast cancer
research efforts. Researchers from
the institute will use Scimagix's Scientific
Image Management System (SIMS®),
to access valuable image data the same
way alphanumeric data is indexed and
mined. The integration of image and
associated alphanumeric data will allow
research decisions to be made faster
while enhancing the quality and accuracy
of those decisions.
The Institute of Cancer Biology believes
that by leveraging technology such as
SIMS™ they will be able to enhance
and accelerate their research, hence
increasing the probability of developing
treatments for breast cancer. The seriousness
of breast cancer is well documented.
According to the American Cancer Society,
in 2003 there will be over 200,000 new
cases of breast cancer detected in the
United States, leading to 39,800 deaths.
“One of the unique challenges
in our specific Breast Cancer research
efforts was to integrate data and results
from seven very different key techniques
to arrive at a means of developing a
single hypothesis,” said Prof.
Julio E. Celis, Scientific Director at
the Institute of Cancer Biology and Coordinator
of Danish Centre for Translational Breast
Cancer Research (DCTB). “SIMS™™ is
proving to be a perfect tool for us as
it not only allows our researchers to
integrate and manage our images; but
also enables them to collaborate more
efficiently within our virtual centre.
Anything we can do to save time and resources
will help us to reach our ultimate goal
of finding a cure for breast cancer.”
“Scimagix's overall goal has always
been to help researchers work more effectively
in helping human-kind battle diseases
like breast cancer,” said Robert
Dunkle, president and CEO of Scimagix. “We
are very pleased to be working with Prof.
Julio Celis who is a globally recognized
leader in his field. By incorporating
SIMS into its current architecture, the
Institute and DCTB can better leverage
its existing resources to effectively
expedite breast cancer research.”
Image informatics is the integration
of valuable image and non-image data
to better understand biology and reach
better decisions. SIMS™ is the
only open, scalable, Web-deployed enterprise
image management system that enables
compliance with 21 CFR Part 11 standards
for electronic data submission to the
FDA. The enterprise-wide, multi-site
software system, designed for image data,
allows scientists to search, mine, analyse
and share results.
About Scimagix Inc.
Scimagix™ Inc., based in San Mateo,
Calif., is the leading provider of image
informatics solutions for pharmaceutical
research and development (R&D). Its
flagship SIMS™ (Scientific Image
Management System) platform, an Oracle®/Web-based
database management system, utilizes
open architecture to deliver a comprehensive
and searchable image database. Image
informatics technology integrates valuable
image and non-image data into SIMS, allowing
scientists to search, mine and analyse
all results. ProteinMine™, running
on top of SIMS™, supports high
throughput analysis and mining of image
data with proprietary visual content
search technology, dramatically increasing
the accuracy and productivity of R&D
processes. Scimagix serves most of the
top 15 pharmaceutical companies including
Pfizer Global R&D, Hoffmann La Roche
and Eli Lilly & Co.
