Hematology
Hematology is an area of medicine that is concerned with the study of blood and blood diseases. These diseases include leukemias, lymphomas, mast cell neoplasms, plasma cell neoplasms and many others. Multiple tissue types are often reviewed including lymphoid tissues, bone marrow and blood. A wide range of tests are used in diagnosis including a variety of immunohistochemistry markers.
Multiple myeloma is a hematopoietic disease of plasma cells. Diagnosis criteria includes myeloma related organ dysfunction, monoclonal protein present in the blood or urine and presence of plasmacytoma or >10% plasma cells in the bone marrow1. Determination of plasma cell counts in bone marrow can be done by labeling with CD138 antibody. BioImagene's CD138 algorithm* is an aid to researchers in the detection and quantitation of CD138 labeled plasma cells in bone marrow samples.
